Statement

I often take a camera out on a walk. I enjoy the contrasts of inner city structures with nature. This is where I live, walk and/ or ride my bike. I start by deciding where I am going, what lens I want to use and how this will affect the look of the shots. I am never sure what I will find, and I throw out the bulk of what I shoot. Old age has made me a more strict editor.

I live in the inner north of Melbourne, which in spite of congestion and air pollution, is blessed with a number of parks. During Covid 19 lock down I have been using these extensively. Why? To keep some form of sanity after weeks of being largely confined to home.
I set the criteria before I leave, depending on my mood, knowledge of the area and time of day. When I want to travel lighter or work with low light I use my 35mm f1.8 Tamron lens. This also has vibration control which really helps sharpness in dimmer light. Image 6 on the other hand was taken with an ultra wide lens, another Tamron, and it is great when I want a grand sky and sense of scale.
Image 4 was taken with the small fast Tamron, which when fully open gives a sharp focus but falls away to a soft blur. The blurring destabilises the mood, reflecting for me, the bizarreness of the whole Covid episode. We are in it, but we don't know when or how it will end.
These sites and walks are familiar to me and give a lot of meaning to my daily life, particularly at this period in time.
